Part 2: A Trend Setter for Science-Fiction

“Frankenstein is considered as one of the most subversive attacks on modern science.”

During the 19th century, Shelley published one of the most important works science fiction ever created. To do so, she spent a considerable amount of time on researches for her novel. She based her book on scientific theories, travels and places from several authors. Thus, she had an impressive reading list that included important works at this period as the work of extreme accounts of polar exploration in George Anson’s 1748 Voyage Round the World; the distinction between alchemy and chemistry in Davy’s 1812 Elements of Chemical Philosophy; the new concepts of brain development explored in Lawrence’s physiological lectures; and she encountered the psychology of guilt and abandonment; in John Milton’s 1667 Paradise Lost. All these works were the predecessors that help Shelley to push this genre to a new level. Moreover, she based the places of her book on several actual loci. For example, she inspired the location for the central confrontation between Victor Frankenstein and The Creature with the Mont Blanc, which is an important scene in the novel.
Another important reason Frankenstein is considered as one of the first real work of Sci-Fi is that she was one of the first to be able to create a story that was futuristic at the time compared with the scientific resources that she had. However, she was still able to include several human characteristics that everyone could relate to them. Thus, she had an incredible sense of creativity and created a story that included future issues that can happen in the future even though she did not have actual knowledge about these probable situations. It is quite impressive because Shelley started to write Frankenstein when she was only a teenager, which demonstrates that she had an outstanding mind.
Finally, Shelley’s work has influence society throughout different decades, which makes her one of the most influential Sci-Fi authors of all time. Even nowadays we can see similar patterns of Frankenstein in several novels and movies that has astonishing sales on the chart. We can say that Shelley has set the rules and standards for not only her generation but also for future generations that still nowadays view her work as a pioneer in this genre.

Part 1: Evolution of Science-Fiction

Science-Fiction has a lot of history. The first antecedents from this genre were found out by Historians from the 2nd century. In this era, they were using speculation and storytelling to understand the world and creating a dividing line between the mythological and historical tends. Thus, they were trying to make the difference between actual situations that happened and others that were only based on beliefs and had not enough possible facts to happen.
After a while, Science-Fiction continued to evolve after the 2nd century, but its bigger development occurred in the 19th century with the arrival of the first science fictions novels. This development occurred mostly because of the arrival of some significant technological advances such as electricity, telegraph and so on, in modern societies, which ultimately change science. An excellent example of the use of these new technologies was in Frankenstein. Moreover, the genre continued to evolve and became what we are used to seeing nowadays, which is mostly works that demonstrate potential innovation and new technologies.
Furthermore, the genre nowadays mostly consists of speculative fiction, which is a narrative based on supernatural and futuristic elements. It also deals with original concepts such as futuristic science, technology and extra-terrestrial existence that are most of them based on science and theory, instead of only creative thoughts.
Finally, the genre became so popular and so diversify that Sci-Fi needed to include sub-genre. Thus, it was divided into two significant sub-genres: Hard Science Fiction and Soft Fiction. Their primary differences are that hard science fiction usually includes attention to detail in the natural sciences like physics, astrophysics, and chemistry. On the other hand, soft science fiction is based on social sciences such as psychology and economics.

The Monster’s Creation: A Different Presentation

As we all know, the 1931 Frankenstein movie is an horror and Science Fiction classic. It is also being considered as one of the best movie of all time, genres for genres.

The creation of the monster and the “It’s alive! It’s alive!” line are pure classics that will still be instilled in pop culture for a long time. The line itself was ranked as the 49th greatest movie quote in american cinema history.

Universal May Have Found a Director for its Remake of The Bride of Frankenstein

With the arrival of The Mummy with Tom Cruise on June 9, Universal Studio has the plan of releasing several remakes of famous monster movies. Thus, the well-known studio has an idea of remaking The Bride of Frankenstein written by John Whale in the next year, which was initially released in 1935. Universal Studio has started to contact potential directors to make this project happen. Thus, it has approached an outstanding Director who is well-known in the horror industry to remake this classic potentially. His name is Bill Condon who has recently remake the Beauty and the Beast for Disney, which has recently raised an immense sum of $ 1 billion at the box office. Furthermore, Mr. Condom has also directed critically acclaimed horror movies like twilight or a movie called Gods and Monsters released in 1998 that features reconstructions of wale’s movie, which will make him the perfect fit for this remake.

With an incredible average rating of 9.1, The Bride of Frankenstein is without a doubt a classic that reaches several generations and as grown in notoriety in the last century. It is even in the top 100 of the best movies of all time by the magazine Time. Thus, this remake could satisfy not only the old-school fans of horror movies but could lead to important commercial performances for Universal Studio with Mr. Condon at its side who could attract major stars to play roles with his prestigious notoriety. However, it is early talks, and both parties have many negotiations to do before they arrive at a final agreement. Even though these negotiations could take some time, we can still stay optimist that the realization of the remake should start at the end of the year with the two parties that claim to be excited to have a potential collaboration with each other.

Shockingly Disappointing: A review of “Victor Frankenstein”

Directed by Paul McGuigan in 2015 and starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, the film Victor Frankenstein is a movie adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic Gothic-horror novel Frankenstein. The film acts as a type of prequel to the tale of Frankenstein depicting the origins of the Igor character.

For a spiritual prequel, however, it does not follow the source material whatsoever, with the only similarities being in the names of the characters.

To summarize the plot (Spoiler alert), Igor is rescued from being a circus slave by none other than Victor Frankenstein, a student at a medical school. Frankenstein discovers that Igor has a talent for performing surgery. Both characters team up and conduct a multitude of experiments that eventually lead to them creating the Frankenstein Monster, and ultimately destroy it.

While as an independent work, this film could be considered a decent work, it is simply the fact that it twists the classic Frankenstein in such a way that is inconsistent with the characters. The movie introduces a plethora of characters that mean absolutely nothing to the plot. This makes the whole viewing experience seem uneventful.

In short, this film is decent enough to watch, though it is best not to analyze it too deeply. Doing so will reveal continuity failures and inconsistency much to the detriment of the viewer’s experience.

The Conception of the Igor character.


Many are familiar with the hunchbacked assistant of Doctor Victor Frankenstein known as Igor, however most people fail to realize that he was not part of the original novel. Indeed, Igor was not even present in the widely successful 1931 film Frankenstein. The original hunchback assistant of the infamous doctor was named Fritz, who unfortunately met his demise at the hands of the Monster after tormenting it with a flaming torch. Sequels of the film, notably Son of Frankenstein, featured a character named Igor, though he was neither hunchbacked nor a lab assistant but rather a blacksmith.

The confusion behind Igor’s role as a hunchbacked assistant may come from the 1953 adaptation of the classic horror film House of Wax. In this movie, the museum curator’s assistant was named Igor, though he was not hunchbacked, but rather deaf and mute.

The similarities between Gothic horror films at the time all took inspiration from the classic Frankenstein movie, and over decades morphed an idea of the original source material which was separate from the novel.

Frankenstein’s Video Games?

As we all passionately know, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is an important novel in American literature. It has influenced many authors, singers, and artists and it is still an influence on our popular culture today. Many movies have been made from it with a count of approximately 50 films.

Not only movies have been made from the novel, but there are video games too. Yes, you read it right, there is some video games based on Frankenstein.

Here is a list of five of those video games:

Dr. Franken: The Adventures of Dr. Franken

Dr. Franken is a single-player video game originally launched on the Game Boy in 1992. It was also released in 1993 on the Super NES. It was developed by Elite Systems and published by Kemco and DTMC.

The game is about Franky, a Frankenstein’s monster that is on a quest to collect the sprinkled body parts of her girlfriend. The game also consists of seven floors where Franky could find various items and parts of her lovely girlfriend. To resurrect his girlfriend Bitsy, keys and special items are necessary to access new areas and to find all the missing parts of Bitsy.

A sequel to the original game was released on the Game Boy in 1997 and was called Dr. Franken II. In this game, Franky must escape the castle in which he finds himself trapped to search for pieces and gold tablet.

Frankenstein by CRL

Frankenstein by CRL is an interactive fiction game released in 1987 by CRL for the Commodore 64, the Amstrad CPC, and the ZX Spectrum computers.

In this game, the player incarnates Dr. Frankenstein who must find and destroy his unleashed monster. On the other hand, the monster must remain free and learn and understand the reason of its creation.

This game was declared an intelligent, gigantic text adventure with a few magnificent illustrations by Sinclair User.

Frankenstein: The Monster Returns

Frankenstein: The Monster Returns is a single-player Nintendo video game published in 1990 by Bandai. The game was released exclusively in North America.

The game takes place after the Frankenstein story. The creature returns from the dead and lead, by the way of magic, a supernatural army. With its magic, the monster has been able to control mythical entities such as Death and Medusa. In this game, the player incarnates a swordsman that is determined to stop the unleashed monster and its army to rescue Emily, a beautiful maiden that was kidnaped by the monster, a slay the unstoppable thing for good.

Frankenstein: Through the Eyes of the Monster

Frankenstein: Through the Eyes of the Monster is an adventure game that stars Tim Curry as Dr. Frankenstein. The game was developed my Amazing Media and Tachyon Studios and was published by Interplay on PC, Mac, and Sega Saturn in a span of three years between 1995 and 1997.

The player is controlling a newly created monster and tries to resurrect Gabrielle, a disappeared child that was killed in an explosion caused by Dr. Frankenstein. The monster that the player incarnates is the late Philip Werren that is brought back to life by Victor Frankenstein and Gabrielle is Werren’s daughter. There are two possible endings to the game, which give different choices to the player that will branch the game into one ending or the other.

The game received an average of about two stars.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a single-player video games that was launched in 1994 for multiple platforms such as the Super NES, the Sega CD, and the Sega Genesis. The game is based on the 1994 film of Frankenstein and was developed by Bits Studio and published by Sony Imagesoft.

In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein video game, the player controls Frankenstein’s monster as it walks through the streets of Ingolstadt, Bavaria. The game takes place in 1793. The player, controlling the creature, seeks revenge against its creator Victor for rejecting him.

The game received a 5.8 out of 10 score from Electronic Gaming Monthly. The magazine called the game a challenging game that includes awkward fighting actions.

The Best Movie Adaptation of Frankenstein

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has been adapted to the cinema multiple times and will be getting a new adaptation soon. Of all the movie adaptations that have been done for the novel, it is the 1931 film that received the best critique, and that is considered as the best movie of the book and one of the most iconic horror movie. The film saw the incarnation of Frankenstein’s monster by Boris Karloff, the incarnation that is considered as the measuring stick for the monster’s image today.

The movie was well received by most of the movie analyst websites and even received a 100% rating from the Rotten Tomatoes. It has received multiple positive reviews from the critique and the fans, which led the movie to be regarded as one of the films of 1931 and one of the best of all time. It has even been placed in the Best 1000 Movies Ever list of The New York Times. It also received the honor of being selected by the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.” The line “He is alive! He is alive!” is recognized has the 49th most famous line in American cinema history.

The movie was a big hit in 1931 and 1932. In June 1932, it earned an astonishing amount of $1.4 million, which was quite impressive at this time.

The movie also influenced the film The Spirit of the Beehive, a movie talking about the obsession that a little girl has for the 1931 Frankenstein movie, which demonstrates how this movie has been an influential horror trendsetter in this generation.

How Norse Mythology Influenced the Frankenstein Novel

While writing Frankenstein, Shelley drew inspiration (intentionally or not) from the vast repertoire of Norse Mythology. There are many parallels between the characters found within the novel, notably Frankenstein and his Monster. It could be argued that Frankenstein’s Monster is an adaptation of Loki, the Norse Jötunn god of Mischief, and Frankenstein is an adaptation of Thor, the Norse god of Thunder. Through extensive analysis, it is apparent that the climax of the story is very similar to the events leading to the Ragnarok, the Norse Apocalypse, all the way down to symbolic representations.

Firstly, it is important to understand the general context of the Ragnarok. In this case, a specific part of it is observed: when Thor ventures into Niflheim, an icebound wasteland, home to all the evil creatures conspiring towards the end of the world. Symbolically, Frankenstein resembles Thor as he is associated with lightning, adventurousness (through scientific exploits and breaking boundaries). The Monster, represents Loki, as he is quite similar to a Jötunn (Ice Giants) in terms of physique. His actions also resemble Loki as they are meant to cause chaos and lead to the demise of the Hero (Frankenstein).

Upon reaching the arctic wasteland in pursuit of the Monster, Frankenstein’s means of transportation (Sled-Dogs) fails him. This could be interpreted as a representation of Fenrir, Loki’s wolf son, being the first obstacle in his quest. Frankenstein then finds shelter on an expedition ship, thus conquering the sea, which could be interpreted as Jörmungandr (the Sea-Serpent). Unfortunately, as Jörmungandr’s poison kills Thor after the battle, the frostbite and illness claim Frankenstein.

The Monster, now in his solitude, is punished for his crimes in a similar fashion as Loki. The Norse Trickster God was bound by chains for eternity, where poison is dripped onto his head. His wife is there to collect the poison in a bowl before it damages Loki, but when she leaves to empty said bowl, Loki is left to writhe in pain as the poison drips onto him. Similarly, the Monster is left to writhe in agony as the absence of his wife renders him unable to mitigate the emotional pain caused by eternal loneliness.
